government on any part of your net worth that is over your personal allowance, also called the nil-rate band.<\/p><p>When the\u00a0<a Currently, IHT is payable where you leave an estate with a value of over \u00a3325,000.<\/p><h2><b>How is inheritance tax calculated?<\/b><\/h2><p>Calculating the tax bill involves adding up everything the deceased person owned or was owed, including by their insurance policy, then deducting all their debts.<\/p><p>Then, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.which.co.uk\/money\/tax\/inheritance-tax\/inheritance-tax-thresholds-rates-and-who-pays-avrxm3k7kgxw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IHT allowance<\/a>\u00a0is deducted, including if the person has received their spouse or partner\u2019s unused allowance and any additional residential allowance. Then any gifts made in the last seven years are considered.<\/p><h2><b>What counts as part of my estate?<\/b><\/h2><p>Your estate is all of your assets, including your home, money in the bank, and any money payable from insurance policies. You can deduct from your estate any money you owe to a person or a bank.
